Mathematics is a core subject in the National Curriculum and is taught daily to all pupils throughout the school. It is taught as a single subject and as well as through cross-curricular topics.

Mathematics transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries and equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. At Hampden Gurney we endeavour to ensure that children develop an enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics and recognise its application to everyday life.

The National Curriculum for Mathematics describes what must be taught in each Key Stage. Hampden Gurney Primary School follows the Primary Framework for Mathematics, which ensures continuity and progression in the teaching of the subject, in addition to the integration of Maths within other curriculum areas.

We aim to:

  • encourage pupils to develop a love of mathematics, and to inspire and challenge them
  • develop pupils’ mathematical concepts, skills and knowledge
  • develop children’s confidence in numeracy
  • emphasise the importance of, and the ability to perform, mental calculations
  • provide opportunities for pupils to use and apply their numeracy skills in a wide range of situations
  • provide opportunities for mathematical thinking and discussion

We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to use and develop their mathematic skills using ICT and across the broader curriculum, as well as providing opportunities for children to use and apply their mathematical skills in a meaningful context.


At Hampden Gurney, we aim to ensure that all children are engaged and excited by Mathematics. To achieve this we provide a variety of opportunities for children to experience maths in a wider context. These opportunities have included themed Maths Weeks, entering inter-school maths challenges, undertaking activities as part of World Maths Day and highlighting the importance of using money in our yearly Enterprise Day.
