Parents and pupils generally start looking at prospective secondary schools in the autumn term of Year 6 when many local schools have Open Days, but it is good to have an idea of the sort of school that you would like your child to attend before this.

Those parents wishing to apply for independent and grammar schools will need to approach these schools directly for information and application forms. Most have Open Days in the autumn term, with entrance exams following in early January. Offer dates for independent schools are usually published in March.
