Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)

About the P.T.A.

Every parent with a child in our school is an automatic member of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). We are a registered charity and meet approximately every month at the school to plan, discuss and vote on the areas that the school and parents think are important, with a special emphasis on fundraising. We have an email network which most parents join, through which you learn about future meetings, and can be informed about various activities happening at school, as well as hearing about local events.

To sign up to the PTA email list just send your name, the name of your child and the year they are in to

We have our own PTA facebook page. 'Like' us and keep in touch with news from school and the wider community.

The PTA regularly organises events and campaigns to raise new funds for the school. This is an important activity as in this time of increased Government cuts, the extra funds help to pay for school trips, field trips, equipment and improvements that are not covered by the school’s main budget.

In the recent years, we have helped to fund a new lighting and sound system in the hall; playdeck toys and equipment; shelving and books for the library; planting equipment including an irrigation system, a wormery and a microscope for the whole school to use in the roof garden; gym equipment including a vaulting horse and spring board and have helped with the travel costs of many school trips.

Examples of past PTA supported projects:

  • Contribution to the cost of London Symphony Orchestra specialist music teachers for all children
  • Contribution to the cost of an art teacher for all year groups
  • Installation of a new lighting and sound system in the hall
  • Subsidising school trips for each class
  • Purchase of much needed ICT equipment, including ipads, tablets and interactive white boards for each classroom
  • Purchase of a mobile scaffold for use by the school caretaker
  • New playground equipment for various year groups, and line painting on playdecks
  • Hire a professional acting troupe to perform a special Christmas Pantomime for the children
  • Provide swimming lessons for Year1-6.
  • Subsidise the annual Secret Santa gifts
  • Provide each child with an Easter Egg
  • Subsiding on-going maintenance of the school roof garden.

The PTA co-ordinates many fundraising events throughout the year, ranging from cake sales to the annual summer fair. The main fundraisers include:

Cake Sale

This is a twice-yearly event, held on Parent Evenings, where two houses join together and organise a cake sale. Parents and children bake, donate and help run the stalls outside school. All proceeds go to the PTA and the house that raises the most money receives bonus house points at the end of the year!

Spring Bop

Held each Spring, the school bop is one of our most popular events, with children and adults alike enjoying a disco, BBQ and bar.

Christmas Trees & Cards

The PTA buy Christmas Trees at wholesale prices, and then organises the re-sale and delivery of trees to parents at school. Each tree sold raises money for the PTA. We also organise each year group to create their own Christmas cards, which are then sold to parents, with a small percentage of the cost coming to the PTA.

Uniform Sales

We hold secondhand uniform sales each term, which is a popular way to stock up on uniform throughout the school year! Donations are always welcome; please leave them in the containers at the top of the Nutford Street stairs.

Autumn Quiz

For the last few years we have a held a very popular Quiz Night in the Autumn term, with a hot meal and a fully-stocked bar helping to take the edge off the trickier questions… It’s a fun, sociable evening helping to raise important funds.

Bi-annual Roof Party and Auction

Held every two years, our rooftop auction is crucial to our fundraising, and we hope to raise enough money to fund specialist music and art teachers for two years. Through the hard work and generous donations of prizes from the school and wider community, we raise significant amounts of money, raised in a fun atmosphere on the roof, with food and drink served all night. Our next Auction will be in June/July 2019 (TBC).

Annual Summer Fair

The Summer Fair (Friday 22 June 2018, 4pm-8pm) has turned into a very popular, great fun, family event incorporating much of the school premises.

This year you can expect to find a 35ft inflatable assault course, a helter skelter, mini golf and bouncy boxing, as well as more traditional fair games such as face painting, chocolate tombola, second hand toys, books and fancy dress, sweet tombola, photo booth, toy tombola, adopt a teddy, beanbag throw – and much, much more.

There is a well-stocked bar running throughout the evening, as well as various food stalls, including BBQ, chips and other hot food options, ice creams, snack bar, candy floss, soft drinks, and more!

Please start bringing in your unwanted good condition items for the stalls. There are collection buckets at the top of the Nutford Street stairs. If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of the bigger activities, please email the PTA and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

We also continually run smaller initiatives to boost the fund throughout the year. These include:

Hampden Gurney Shop & Give Scheme

Parents can now access their favourite online shops through a tailored Hampden Gurney portal-based on a ‘Shop and Give’ fund raising model. Simply shop, they give!

The scheme is powered by TheGivingMachine (TGM), a not-for-profit organisation. When you buy online via TheGivingMachine, a sales commission is received from the participating shop. 75% of this is converted into a donation on your behalf and sent to Hampden Gurney Primary School. 25% administration charge is retained by TGM.

This service is free to you, the shopper and giver. You’ll find more than 250 different shops at TheGivingMachine including all your favourite high street names such as Amazon, Argos, John Lewis and others.
