Wellbeing at Hampden Gurney

Our 5 Ways to Wellbeing

At Hampden Gurney , we aim to provide children with the most comprehensive education possible. This includes a strong focus on developing, promoting and encouraging staff, pupils and families to embark on a journey towards healthy mental and emotional wellbeing.

We want children to understand wellbeing is not about being ‘happy’, we want children to understand that we have many healthy experiences that are ‘good’ without any link to feeling happy.

Children at Hampden Gurney, learn to understand that wellbeing is about our ability to make a contribution to our community, work productively, respond to challenges and bounce back and stay the course.

Should you have any worries, concerns or just want to have a chat regarding wellbeing, please contact Ms Stefani

Wellbeing Award

In January, 2023, the school was awarded the Wellbeing Award for Schools!

‘Working together with our school community, Hampden Gurney was able to achieve this award by completing many different projects across the school which aimed to improve the wellbeing culture long-term. We are immensely grateful to everyone involved: children, staff, parents and governors, it would have been impossible without you. Hampden Gurney are committed to  promoting and protecting positive emotional wellbeing and mental health and this award highlights are continued efforts to do so. We look forward to ensuring wellbeing remains a key focus for many years to come!’ – Miss Shin and Miss Macdonald, January 2023

There are eight objectives to achieve within the Wellbeing Award Framework, containing several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) set out within each. The award focuses on ensuring effective practice and provision is in place that promotes the emotional wellbeing and mental health of both staff and pupils. The award will enable us to develop these practices where necessary and help us to ensure that wellbeing is embedded in the long-term culture of our school. It will help us to create an ethos where mental health is regarded as the responsibility of all.

With this award, we have demonstrated our commitment to:

  • Promoting mental health as part of every day school life
  • Improving the emotional well-being of our staff and pupils
  • Ensuring mental health problems are identified early and appropriate support provided
  • Offering provision and interventions that matches the needs of our pupils and staff
  • Promoting the importance of mental health awareness
  • Capturing the views of parents, pupils and teachers on mental health issues

Wellbeing Ambassadors

Our children are just as keen as we are to ensure long-term, cultural change happens at Hampden Gurney. We had lots of children volunteering to help and decided to hold a democratic vote within our classes.  Our Wellbeing Ambassadors have been appointed to take an active role in planning and delivering school wellbeing events, spreading the word and checking in on different groups of our school community.

Our Wellbeing Ambassadors for 2025-2026 are:

Y1- Hannah and Gabriel

Y2- Olivia and Jeannie

Y3- Iola and Oscar

Y4- Thomson and Sophia

Y5- Theo and Marina

Y6- Charlotte and Daniel

When you need us…

Mental Health and Wellbeing are increasingly a central consideration within the school and within the wider community. Here at Hampden Gurney, we want to make life better for our children, remove any stigma around mental health and we do so by encouraging talk. A problem is halved when it is shared.

We have a number of different processes to help students who feel that they may need to talk to someone about their mental health or get the support for someone they are concerned about.

  • Online Reporting – if you have a concern about your child, another child or even yourself, you can email admin@hampdengurney.co.uk for further support
  • Zones of Regulation- pupils are encouraged every morning and throughout the day to check in and place themselves on a colour which represents how they are feeling, teachers and TAs regularly check the board and take appropriate action
  • Worry Boxes – pupils can post a note with concerns about another pupil or themselves. These are emptied daily and any information inside is followed up by the class teacher and/or a senior member of staff
  • Pupils can self refer by coming to the well-being lead Ms Stefani
  • Pupils can also approach any member of staff that they feel confident with,  with any concerns.

As a school, we take all aspects of a young person’s wellbeing seriously, but we are first and foremost a school. As well as contacting us to let us know your concerns, we strongly recommend that you contact your GP to discuss any serious concerns that you may have about your young person.

Should you need help with finding the right support, please see our wellbeing directory for signposting to local services and advice for parents.
